| You’ll learn a variety of dances with African, European, and indigenous influences, including the upright and elegant Bele (bell-eh); the waltz-like Spanish Joropo; the joyous Tobago Jig; dances of the traditional masked Carnival characters; and dances of the sacred Orisha tradition of West Africa. A fount of knowledge, Michael also shares the history behind the dances for a richer understanding of what you’re learning. |
About Michael Manswell
| Dancer, Singer, Choreographer, Teaching Artist, Artistic Director, Michael Manswell began his artistic life as a storyteller at arts festivals winning many prizes and awards. He studied music with Lindy-Anne Bodden-Ritch and at Brooklyn College with Tom Cultice. He studied dance at the Trinidad Dance Theater with Eugene Joseph and worked with Geoffrey Holder on “Dougla II” and “La Valse des Bakas” for TDT and toured with the company in the USA and the Caribbean. A prolific choreographer he has created many works currently in the repertoire of Something Positive. An orisha devotee in the Yoruba religion (Trinidad & Tobago) Mr. Manswell presents lectures and workshops in dance, music, and the traditional religious practice. He is currently teaching for Something Positive Inc., the Jamaica Center for Arts & Learning (JCAL), the Brooklyn Arts Council, the Caribbean Cultural Center and is an Adjunct Professor of Dance at Lehman College (CUNY). |
The Diaspora Dance series offers the public access to an array of Caribbean Dance forms and fitness styles. These workshops $15 each, range from Guyana to Cuba, back to Brazil and many more. Keep an eye out for these Thursday classes at 6:30-7:45pm beginning April 13, 2017.
